PLUCKLEY
Pluckley is famous all over the world & considered to be one of the most haunted places on the planet
Haunted Pluckley has featured in TV shows across the globe, focusing on the ghosts & legends people claim to experience here
Both skeptics & believers have encountered odd phenomena & strange visions in Pluckley, & these strange happenings continue to the present day
The tiny Kent village of Pluckley is approximately 5 miles squared, but within this area is an uncanny array of ghostly tales & legends
Ashford & the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet is just 7 miles from Pluckley
Today the population remains small, just 1069 people spread throughout the plush green fields & lanes
This idyllic chocolate box pretty haven is the perfect setting for country hikes & scenic drives. Visitors come from near & far to experience Pluckley, to see the most haunted village for themselves
Many of the buildings here retain the famous 'Dering Windows', characteristic tall arched stone shaped windows, unique to Pluckley and a few surrounding hamlets
The presence of these windows is a permanent memorial to their creators, a long lost line of wealthy Baronets, the Derings, who once owned much of the land & buildings
Pluckley has its own resident Pluckley Ghost Walk & its own railway station. Visitors can be into central London, some 56 miles away, within one hour & twenty minutes
The village centre is small, just a post office, a pub, a school & butchers. There was a bakery here once, but today it's used as a home
The spectre of war remains within Pluckley, a concrete pillbox guardhouse sits silently on Smarden Road. This building serves as a stark reminder of the treacherous location the village occupied during WWII, regularly bombarded by missiles
Doodlebug rockets sent from Nazi Germany tore through Pluckley & the surrounding land, sometimes falling short of their London targets or being shot down
St Nicholas church, a 900 year old grade one listed chapel, lost its roof to the bombing. Further on in Little Chart, St Mary's church wasn't so lucky. Its ruins stand exactly as they looked after the bomb exploded
There's more to Pluckley than just ghosts. The village has a large population of hedgehogs & in neighbouring Pluckley Thorne, a hedgehog rescue centre
The resident bat population thrives in Pluckley & they emerge at sundown consuming thousands of insects throughout the year
